Russian strikes on the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa overnight resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a teenage girl, and injured ten others, according to regional governor Oleg Kiper. The attacks targeted residential areas, with a two-storey building completely destroyed.

Among the victims were a 43-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, and a 16-year-old girl, highlighting the devastating impact on civilians. Footage from the scene showed emergency workers laboring through the rubble by lamplight, recovering bodies amidst the destruction.

The Odesa region has faced consistent attacks from Russian forces throughout the ongoing conflict, aimed primarily at undermining Ukraine’s export capabilities. The coastal area, vital for shipping and grain exports, has been a frequent target, with strikes damaging cargo ships and grain silos. Before the invasion in February 2022, Ukraine was one of the world’s largest grain exporters, but the continued assaults on its port and storage facilities have significantly hindered its agricultural output.

This latest incident follows a series of violent attacks, including one on Wednesday that killed eight people, prompting the European Union to condemn the strikes as a “blatant violation of international law.”

In the wake of these escalations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is concluding a whirlwind tour of Europe aimed at garnering military and financial support ahead of a challenging winter. As part of his diplomatic efforts, Zelensky is scheduled to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican today before heading to Berlin for discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Zelensky’s trip comes at a critical juncture, with concerns growing about dwindling support for Ukraine, particularly if Donald Trump were to win the U.S. presidency next month. The German government has indicated plans to halve its bilateral military aid to Ukraine next year, making Zelensky’s discussions with Scholz particularly vital as he seeks to bolster military assistance during a time of escalating conflict.

As the situation in Odesa and other regions remains tense, the international community continues to monitor the conflict closely, underscoring the urgent need for sustained support for Ukraine amidst ongoing hostilities.
