A man has been arrested after a young girl was struck by an e-bike in north Dublin on Monday evening, leaving her in hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after 8.20pm at Curragh Hall in Tyrellstown. Gardaí said the girl was hit by what has been described as a “Surron-type e-bike,” which did not remain at the scene following the collision.
Emergency services were called, and the child was quickly transferred to Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, where she continues to receive treatment. Her injuries have been described as serious, though no further update on her condition has been provided.
In the hours following the incident, gardaí arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the case. He is currently being held at a garda station in north Dublin under questioning.
Investigators have launched an appeal for witnesses, urging anyone who may have seen a Surron-type e-bike in the Tyrellstown area yesterday evening to come forward. In particular, they are keen to hear from people who were in or around Curragh Hall Crescent between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Gardaí are also appealing for drivers with camera footage, including dashcam recordings, to assist with the investigation. “We are asking anyone who was in the Curragh Hall area at the time, or who may have video evidence, to contact us as soon as possible,” a spokesperson said.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of high-powered e-bikes, particularly in residential areas. Surron-style bikes, often resembling lightweight motorcycles, have been the subject of increasing scrutiny due to their speed and power compared to standard pedal-assisted e-bikes.
Local residents in Tyrellstown expressed shock over the collision. Several community members gathered at the scene on Tuesday morning, with one describing the area as “usually very quiet” but adding that “these bikes can be very fast and dangerous, especially around children.”
The investigation remains ongoing as gardaí work to piece together the events leading up to the collision. Officers have not ruled out further arrests.
