Five skiers were killed in two separate avalanches on Saturday in the Salzburg Pongau region of western Austria, authorities confirmed. Two others were injured, one critically, in what officials described as a reminder of the severe avalanche risk in the area.

The deadliest incident occurred in the Gastein Valley, south of Salzburg city, where a snow slide swept away seven people. Four skiers died in the slide, while two were injured and a third escaped unharmed. Rescue teams, including four helicopters, mountain rescue personnel, Red Cross dog squads, and a crisis intervention unit, were dispatched to assist the wounded and recover the bodies.

“This tragedy painfully demonstrates how serious the current avalanche situation is,” said Gerhard Kremser, head of the Pongau mountain rescue service. He noted that authorities had issued repeated warnings about heightened avalanche risk in the region.

Just hours earlier, a female skier was found buried under an avalanche at around 2,200 meters in the nearby Bad Hofgastein area. Authorities reported additional avalanches in the region that did not result in casualties.

Authorities expressed condolences to the families of the victims. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. This tragedy highlights the dangers that skiers face under current conditions,” Kremser added.

Avalanches are a recurring hazard in the Alps during winter. Earlier this week, a 13-year-old boy died after being swept away by an avalanche while skiing. The previous week, a 58-year-old skier also lost his life in a similar incident.

Officials are urging skiers to exercise extreme caution, follow local advice, and pay close attention to weather and avalanche warnings. The combination of snow accumulation, warming temperatures, and unstable slopes has contributed to one of the most dangerous periods for winter sports enthusiasts in the region.

Local rescue services emphasized the importance of preparedness and safety equipment when skiing or hiking in avalanche-prone areas. They also highlighted the role of public awareness in preventing further casualties.

The Salzburg Pongau region is a popular destination for winter sports, attracting skiers from across Europe. While the area’s slopes are well-maintained, changing weather conditions and natural hazards continue to pose a serious threat to visitors.

Authorities warned that avalanches could continue to occur in the coming days, urging all outdoor enthusiasts to respect restrictions and avoid high-risk zones. Emergency teams remain on high alert to respond quickly to any further incidents.
