Amazon’s web services operations in Ireland posted a significant revenue increase of €1 billion in 2024, according to newly filed accounts, as the tech giant continued its aggressive expansion in the region.

Amazon Data Services Ireland Ltd (ADSIL), which operates data hubs across the country, saw revenues surge 16.5% to €7.09 billion for the year ending December 31, up from €6.09 billion in 2023. Pre-tax profits also rose sharply by 51% to €22.96 million, up from €15.16 million, driven by growing demand for cloud services.

The firm’s relatively modest operating profit of €57.04 million was the result of hefty operating costs totalling €7.03 billion, including €6.04 billion in administrative expenses and €997.2 million in cost of sales. A €50.18 million net interest expense was partially offset by a €16.1 million gain on an asset disposal.

ADSIL recorded a post-tax profit of €3.1 million after a corporation tax bill of €19.78 million. The company did not issue a dividend last year, a notable change from the €600 million payout to shareholders in 2023.

The year also marked major capital investment by Amazon in Ireland. ADSIL added €1.77 billion in tangible assets, including nearly €1 billion in ongoing construction projects. Shareholder funds at the company rose from €4.6 billion to €7.66 billion, primarily due to a significant increase in the firm’s ‘other reserve’.

The company, which employs over 1,600 people, reduced its staff costs from €216.2 million to €196.9 million, including €29.4 million in share-based payments. At the end of the year, it employed 1,682 people across operations and management.

Directors were paid a combined €1.34 million in 2024, including €451,000 in emoluments and €870,000 in share-based awards.

Meanwhile, another Amazon subsidiary in Ireland, Amazon CS Ireland Ltd (ACSI), which runs a customer support centre in Cork, posted a slight revenue increase to €303.9 million. However, it recorded a pre-tax loss of €11.17 million due to €311.4 million in administrative expenses.

Despite the loss, headcount at ACSI grew to 2,351 by year-end, with staff costs slightly down at €135.3 million, including €18.8 million in share-based payments. Director pay at ACSI amounted to €800,000.

Amazon is currently awaiting planning approval for three new data centres with a combined power load of 73MW on its 65-acre Dublin campus, underlining the company’s long-term commitment to its Irish operations.
