The growing need for an interdisciplinary curriculum in education

Knowledge is increasing in exponential proportions in all places of study. If you look at one field, such as science, you see the unique degree of specialization that has resulted from research and practice. Each area of the curriculum has the benefits of development. 

In English, there are new writers, the latest books, and new arrangements to consider every year. In the social sciences, there are difficult questions of choosing focal cultures, for we cannot study every country in the world.

For example, many states now require a curriculum covering AIDS, and Drug precluding curricula have been on the books for several years in many forms. Sex education and family life curriculums are currently integral elements of the public school future in some areas of the country. These are essential topics, but they add stress to the school schedule. The length of the school day in the United States has stayed the same since the 1890s. Fragmented schedules

Schools react to state needs by dividing time into blocks to fulfill specific responsibilities and maintain accountability. Often, state requirements have been in phrases of minutes per week. Students feel this fragmentation keenly. It is easy to forget how, eight times a day, students jump out of their seats every 40 minutes and run for 5 minutes to another setting, another subject, another teacher, another set of students.

Relevance of curriculum

Recent estimates suggest that, nationally,25 percent of students drop out annually, and in urban areas 40 percent. That is very wrong. A common concern of students is unimportant of their course work in their lives out of school.

We realize that we cannot train people in specializations and expect them to handle the multifaceted nature of their work. Our medical schools now have philosophers in place. Doctors cannot be taught only in physiology and the body’s biology: a doctor treats the whole human being. The decent questions that engage doctors have a great deal to do with the effectiveness of their treatments on patients. Business schools are equipping these courses, and education schools are providing business.

Society’s response to fragmentation

We must admit that we cannot train people in specializations and expect them to fare with the multifaceted nature of their work. It is not unexpected that many of our nation’s medical schools now have philosophers. A doctor not be taught only in physiology and body biology: a doctor treats the whole human being.

Business schools provide ethics courses teaching schools deliver business administration courses, and so forth. We evolved in the technological world, so we draw from the coverage of occupations to better serve our specific professions. The continued trend in the schools toward interdisciplinarity will help students better combine strategies from their studies into the larger world.
