Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island isolated from the ChinaTaiwan strait. It has been governed independently of landmass China, officially the People’s Republic of China(PRC), since 1949. The PRC considers the island a renegade province and unifies Taiwan with the mainland. In Taiwan, which has its own democratically elected government and is home to twenty-three million people, political leaders have different ideas on the island, status, and relations with the mainland.
Ross-strait tensions have escalated since the election of Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen in 2016.
Tsai has rejected receiving a formula that her predecessor, Ma Ying-jeou, supported to allow for increased cross-strait ties.
Meanwhile, Beijing has taken increasingly aggressive actions, including flying fighter jets near the island. As a result, some reviewers fear that a Chinese attack on Taiwan can bring the United States into a war with China.
Chinese officials have forcefully declared this summer that no part of the Taiwan Strait can be considered international waters, contrary to the ideas of the United States and other nations. In June, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that China has sovereignty, sovereign dues, and jurisdiction over Taiwan.
American administrators do not know whether China plans to enforce that claim. But Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, who is close to President Biden and marketing with the administration often on issues involving Taiwan, said there is plenty of attention paid to what lesson China, its military, and Mr xi might be learning from events in Ukraine.
Tensions over Taiwan have been growing for a month
This Spring, Biden angered Beijing when he said his administration was ready to use military force to protect the island, which was walking back later.
White House administrators said the call had been in the works for weeks as part of efforts by the administration to manage the relationship.

After the call, a senior administration official told journalists that Biden and Xi discussed the reality that the United States and China have discrepancies. When arriving in Taiwan, adding differences handled this for over 40 years keeping an open line of communication on this matter is critical.
But focus on the call grew when news leaked that Pelosi was considering traveling to the self-governing island. It would be the highest-level commission in the United States in 25 years.
China has alerted would take resolute and forceful measures if Pelosi follows through with the visit.
The divisions over Taiwan come at a time of several challenges between the two Superpowers: the Russian attack on Ukraine, U.S. tariffs, and the Chinese charge in the pacific.
The White House has pressed about the achievable Pelosi trip for a week. Biden told reporters That the U.S. military was against the thought of the house speaker touring Taiwan.
But Biden must be careful not to look like surrendering to the Chinese, as politicians on both sides of the aisle publicly discussed that Pelosi should not back down to the Chinese government alerts.
On Thursday, the Chinese readout alerted against external and internal interference that promoted independence for Taiwan. Those who play with fire will pass by it. It hoped that U.S.will be clear-eyed about this, the readout said.
