Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has formally resigned from his position.
Varadkar convened with President Michael D. Higgins at the presidential residence in Dublin on Monday evening to complete the formalities of his resignation. Sabina Higgins, the president’s spouse, was also present at Áras an Uachtaráin.
Varadkar’s resignation signifies the conclusion of his term as Taoiseach of Ireland.
In a surprising turn of events earlier in March, Varadkar, the former leader of Fine Gael, made public his decision to step down from his role as head of government. He attributed a blend of personal and political factors to his resign.
Varadkar, who made history by becoming the youngest Taoiseach of Ireland at the age of 38 in 2017, spearheaded the coalition government in Dublin, comprising three parties: Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and the Green Party.
Meanwhile, Simon Harris, the unopposed leader of Fine Gael, is anticipated to be elected as the new Taoiseach by members of parliament on Tuesday.
