Former Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan has been placed in interim charge of Wigan Athletic following the sacking of manager Shaun Maloney.

Maloney, who had been at the helm for two years, was dismissed on Sunday, along with assistant manager Max Rogers, after Wigan’s 2-1 home defeat to Reading left them 15th in League One, just six points above the relegation zone.

In a statement, the club acknowledged that results had not met expectations this season, particularly at the DW Stadium.

“It cannot be overlooked that the current League One campaign has clearly not progressed as anticipated,” the statement read.

“Home results and performances, in particular, have been disappointing and below the standard at which our supporters expect. For this reason, the Board felt that it was time for a change.”

The club added that the timing of the decision would allow for adequate time to find a successor and prepare for the future.

Whelan Steps In to Steady the Ship
First-team coach Glenn Whelan, alongside Graham Barrow and Frankie Bunn, will take temporary charge of the team as Wigan begins the search for a permanent replacement.

Whelan, a former Republic of Ireland midfielder, had an illustrious playing career with Stoke City, Aston Villa, and Wigan, among others. His appointment signals a short-term solution as the club looks to navigate a crucial period in their season.

Wigan will be back in League One action on Tuesday as they travel to face Mansfield, hoping for a positive result under Whelan’s leadership.
