Monaghan delivered a ruthless performance against Meath at Páirc Tailteann, securing a resounding victory that puts them on the brink of an immediate return to Division 1. The Farney County, relegated last season after a decade in the top flight, now require just a draw against Down next weekend to confirm their promotion.

Led by captain Micheál Bannigan, who scored an impressive eight points, Monaghan took full advantage of the newly introduced 40-metre arc, registering six two-pointers throughout the game. Jack McCarron, introduced midway through the first half, made a huge impact, adding seven points to the tally, while Stephen O’Hanlon’s blistering pace and direct running caused Meath’s defence endless problems.

Goalkeeper Rory Beggan also played a pivotal role, contributing four points, including two two-point frees. Despite the latest rule adjustments, Beggan ventured past the halfway line, joining Monaghan’s attacking plays and further stretching the Meath defence.

Meath Struggle as Monaghan Dominate First Half
For Meath, the match proved to be their most disappointing outing of the campaign, as they slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season. Having started the day level on eight points with Monaghan at the top of Division 2, they now face a crucial fixture against Louth next weekend in a bid to keep their promotion hopes alive.

The Royals were missing key players, with Matthew Costello and Shane Walsh absent from the attack. Manager Robbie Brennan made four changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Eoin Harkin, Cian McBride, Sean Ryan, and Keith Curtis, while Adam O’Neill, Brian O’Halloran, Thomas O’Reilly, and Walsh made way.

However, the adjustments failed to provide the right balance, and Meath found themselves overwhelmed early on. When Monaghan took the lead in the 12th minute through a two-point free from Beggan, they never looked back, surging ahead and leaving Meath trailing by a massive 15 points at halftime.

Promotion Hopes Still Alive for Meath
Despite the setback, Meath’s promotion ambitions remain intact. A win against Louth next weekend could still see them secure a place in Division 1, depending on other results. However, they will need a much-improved performance after this heavy defeat.

For Monaghan, the focus now shifts to their final fixture against Down. With momentum firmly on their side, they are within touching distance of securing an immediate return to the top tier, capping off a dominant campaign in Division 2.
