A Russian investigator has reported that a third bridge over the Seym River in Russia’s Kursk region has been damaged by Ukrainian forces. The bridge was struck on August 18, following a series of similar attacks on infrastructure in the area.
The damage to the bridge in the village of Karyzh was described in a video statement posted by Russian state TV anchor Vladimir Solovyov on his Telegram channel. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the attack involved rocket and artillery fire targeting both residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
The conflict in the Kursk region has intensified since August 6, when Ukrainian troops breached Russia’s western border in a significant military setback for Russia. On Friday, the Russian foreign ministry claimed that Western rockets, likely U.S.-made HIMARS, were used to destroy a bridge over the Seym River in the Glushkovo district.
In a separate statement, a Russian investigator confirmed that another bridge near Zvannoe, also over the Seym River, had been “damaged” by HIMARS rockets. This bridge was reportedly used for evacuating civilians. Ukrainian air force commander Oleksandr Syrsky confirmed the destruction of the second bridge, asserting that it hindered Russian supply lines.
Military analysts highlight that there are three key bridges in the area crucial for Russian logistical support. Pro-Russian military blogger Yuri Podolyaka speculates that Ukraine may soon target a strategic bridge over the Psyol River.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported progress in the Kursk region, stating that Ukrainian forces are achieving their objectives. He also mentioned an increase in the “prisoner of war” exchange fund, indicating a strategic advance. Zelensky emphasized that the offensive aims to establish a buffer zone within Russian territory and press for negotiations under “fair” terms.
Meanwhile, in the southern Russian city of Proletarsk, a state of emergency has been declared following a fire at an oil storage facility hit by a Ukrainian drone. The blaze, which has been burning for over 24 hours, has led to injuries among firefighters and prompted heightened emergency measures.
Local governor Vasily Golubev reported that 18 firefighters were injured, with four suffering moderate to severe burns. The fire is currently being contained, and additional medical support has been dispatched to the area. The city administration assured that there is no immediate threat to residential areas.
Ukrainian President Zelensky defended the drone strikes as “fair” retaliation for Russian attacks on Ukraine, amid ongoing tensions and conflict in the region.
