Russia’s recent military strikes across Ukrainian regions have left one person dead and 23 others injured, according to officials. In the Kherson region, a 61-year-old woman was killed and seven people were wounded due to shelling and airstrikes that targeted residential buildings. In the Zaporizhzhia region, 16 individuals were injured following overnight airstrikes, including seven attacks on the city and its surrounding areas.
Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported that the strikes were particularly devastating, with extensive damage to local infrastructure. Meanwhile, Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov stated on Telegram that four of the injured women required hospitalization. Images shared by the governor and police showed destroyed apartments, damaged vehicles, and shattered windows.
The timing of these assaults coincides with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States, where he is set to present his “victory plan” aimed at ending the nearly three-year conflict with Russia. As he meets with President Joe Biden and key political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Zelensky hopes to garner support for his proposals.
This visit follows a summer marked by intense fighting, with Russian forces making significant advances in eastern Ukraine while Ukrainian troops maintain control over parts of the Kursk region. The ongoing conflict has prompted Ukraine to request long-range weapons from Western allies to strike deeper into Russian territory, a demand that has yet to be met.
During the latest strikes, Ukraine’s air force reported successfully intercepting three Shahed attack drones and preventing another drone and two cruise missiles from reaching their intended targets. Conversely, the Russian defense ministry claimed to have intercepted and destroyed eight Ukrainian drones over its Kursk and Belgorod border regions.
As Zelensky asserts the importance of his victory plan, he stated on social media, “We have arrived in the United States of America. The plan for Ukraine’s victory will be on the table for all our allies.” With the ongoing violence in Ukraine and strategic discussions taking place in Washington, the situation remains critical as both sides prepare for further confrontations.
