Israel has successfully launched its latest communications satellite, Dror 1, into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The launch marks a major milestone in the country’s space capabilities, with officials describing it as a significant advancement in both strategic and civilian communications.

The satellite, built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), lifted off in the early hours of Sunday, with SpaceX confirming the launch took place at 1:04 a.m. local time (6:04 a.m. Irish time). Video footage released following the launch showed the two-stage reusable rocket soaring into the night sky.

The Israeli foreign ministry hailed the launch as the deployment of a “$200 million smartphone in space,” underlining Dror 1’s dual-purpose role in supporting the country’s secure communications and civilian technological needs over the next 15 years.

This $200 million ‘smartphone in space’ will power Israel’s strategic and civilian communications for 15 years,” the foreign ministry wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

IAI also celebrated the launch, describing it as “a historic leap for Israeli space technology.” The company has previously stated that Dror 1 is the most sophisticated communications satellite ever developed in Israel, highlighting its importance for the country’s national infrastructure and independent communications network.

The satellite is expected to enhance Israel’s autonomy in communications and reduce its reliance on foreign satellite networks, particularly in areas concerning national security and emergency services.

The successful deployment of Dror 1 is especially significant considering Israel’s previous setback in space-related efforts. In 2016, an earlier communications satellite, Amos-6, was destroyed in a launch pad explosion when a Falcon 9 rocket failed during a pre-launch test. That incident resulted in the loss of a satellite valued between $200 and $300 million.

This time, however, the mission proceeded without incident, marking a strong comeback and boosting confidence in Israel’s growing space programme.

The launch comes amid a broader trend of increased global investment in satellite technology, with countries and private companies alike recognising the critical role of space infrastructure in communications, defence, and economic development.

With Dror 1 now in orbit, Israel joins a growing list of nations expanding their presence in space with sophisticated, domestically built technology. The satellite is expected to begin operational service in the coming months, solidifying Israel’s position as a key player in the modern space race.
